History: Nikolaj was born just minutes after his twin sister, Cassie, and was the immediate pride and joy of his father, Titus.Both he and his sister were very close to their mother and the family was happier than it had ever been. The earliest days of Nikolaj's youth were unburdened and free and he had barely a care in the world. About five years later. Joanne became pregnant again and Nikolaj was immensely excited, hoping for a baby brother whom he could help take care of. Cassie was a little jealous of the shared attention, but otherwise joined in Nikolaj's wish for a brother, as she did not want to have to compete with a sister. However, tragedy struck their family the night the baby was born, killing Joanne in childbirth. The baby was a boy, but he was a dwarf, one who Titus began to hold a grudge against for the "murder" of his beloved wife and Cassie felt exactly the same. They despised the child, but Nikolaj, though saddened by the loss of his mother, felt nothing but protectiveness towards his little brother. He was kind and affectionate towards him, eager for him to grow so that he could teach everything he knew. The entire world, it seemed, had scorned Terrence, and Nikolaj began to feel a bitterness towards the injustice of it. As Terrence grew, he seemed to recognize Nikolaj's devotion and took to following him around everywhere, which delighted the older boy immensely. Together, they got into all sorts of trouble, and took particular humor in harassing their sister.
When Nikolaj turned seventeen, his father "suggested" that he begin making moves towards obtaining a business degree and attend the prestigious school where he himself had gone so that he could take over the family business one day. Nikolaj had absolutely no interest in this future, however, and spoke of his frustration to Cassie one night. Cassie had been uncharacteristically sympathetic and gentle and listened with understanding. Then she revealed she had been harboring romantic feelings and that she believed that the two of them belonged together, as they had been brought into the world as one and should therefore live out their lives together in the same way. She suggested that he join the military, resigning himself to the government and therefore away from their father's reach. She promised to join him wherever he was stationed and they could start their future. Nikolaj began to convince himself of returning her feelings and agreed to her idea.
Nikolaj enlisted in the army behind his father's back and left for his six weeks of training, swearing to write to each Cassie and Terrence while he was away. A part of him was uncomfortable with leaving his younger brother to the whims of their father and sister, but he consoled himself with the fact that the boy was older and could handle himself. He dutifully engaged in his chosen role and, despite hating having to abide by all the strict rules of the military, he was convinced it was all worth it in order to achieve the happiness that had become solidified in his mind.
