Essential Information
Personality: Quiet and reserved, Joel often keeps to himself. He can have a difficult time communicating, particularly his feelings, until he is pushed to do so. He grew up insecure and shy, prone to bouts of melancholy, in which he would isolate himself from his siblings, his status as an "outsider" something that was never completely lost on him. This brought with it plenty of pent up anger, which often flared up uncontrollably when he was younger, but the years have taught him restraint. Even so, his family means the world to him, and he has always remained viciously loyal and protective of them, willing to do almost anything for them.
He has a simple, genuine nature, with a pure heart. He expects and asks for very little from others. One of his biggest flaws may in fact be thinking of himself too little. A reluctant but natural leader, he has an innate sense of morality, and he always strives to do the right thing, even when the right thing might differ from what his heart wants. He is willing to make the hard decisions that many shy away from. He cares deeply for others, and humanity as a whole, and he has a strong desire for some form of peace in the world. Experience over the years taught him resolve, and he remains firm and unwavering in his convictions, and although he often questions himself and his place in the world, and even in the lives of the people he cares for, he remains true to who he is, and he won't allow the world to use it against him. Even in these dark times, he remains consistent: humble, compassionate, honest, courageous, just, modest, and unpretentious.
Family: Edward Smith (father), Leanne Winters (mother), Catherine Smith (step-mother), Roy, Brian and Ricky Smith (half-brothers), Sasha and Ava Smith (half-sisters), Toby Greyson (foster brother), Benjamin Smith (uncle)
History: The bastard son of Edward Smith, fathered only a few short months after his loveless marriage to Catherine, Joel was taken in and raised by his father after his mother died in childbirth. Out of deference to his wife and the shame of his past actions, Edward never spoke of Joel's mother to him, leaving him to wonder about her for most of his life. Although he suffered cold hostility from the woman who was forced to endure the presence of a child that wasn't hers, his brothers and sisters readily accepted him as one of their own, as their brother, and they never gave him cause to feel excluded growing up. In fact, any exclusion he did feel was often spurned from Catherine, or from his own insecurities. The knowledge that he was their bastard brother instilled in him a feeling of inferiority to the rest of them, even to their foster brother, Toby, who was brought in to live with them at a young age. It was an ever-present idea that he could never completely get out of his head, one which shaped his own identity.
In spite of this, he was always very close to his siblings, having grown up alongside Roy every step of the way, and having formed a deep understanding with Ava as she began to find her place in the world and realize that she wasn't like most other girls. She, too, began to feel isolated, and she would often come to him for advice, or sometimes just to let off steam. He felt intensely protective of all of his younger siblings, but he had a special soft spot for her.
Their father was a college professor, and they grew up living comfortably in the northern United States. They were a heavily outdoors family, and they were taught how to fight and hunt from an early age. He and Roy would often compete with each other, taking turns in outdoing the another, and, when Toby came along, he joined in on this right alongside them. Despite the unique situation and general discomfort his own presence brought, Joel and his siblings grew up happy and well cared for. They all loved and admired their father, who managed to make amends with his wife, and together they provided their children a happy and loving home.
When he graduated high school, Joel moved out of the house, deciding that removing himself from the environment would be easier on all of them. However, he did not move far, preferring to stay in close contact with his family, and his Uncle Benjamin agreed to let him stay with him, until he earned enough to get an apartment of his own. He worked through college along with his brothers, Roy and Toby, both of whom aspired to join the police academy, while Joel veered toward social work. Such was the state of things when disaster first struck...
One evening, as they were all spending time together around the house, a city warning was released, which called for an immediate, large-scale evacuation. There had been an attack, an attack by some unexplained horde of creatures, and while several key spots were hit, the one that alarmed them most of all was when they heard the college had been attacked. As it happened, it was the college Edward worked at, and he had stayed late that day, grading papers. Roy and Joel rushed over to the scene, and, unbeknowest to them, Ava followed. They found what remained of their father, scattered across the floor of his classroom. He had been eaten alive. When Ava came running into the room, Joel quickly grabbed her and pulled her away from the carnage, to keep her from seeing it. They hurried home, fueled by the sudden urgency of the situation, grabbed the others, and left. On their way out of the city, however, in the chaos of the crowds, Brian ended up falling, and his legs were trampled. They were rendered useless.
Before they left Minnesota, they made attempts to rendezvous with their uncle, but by the time they reached him, they found him much changed. He attacked them on sight, clawing and biting ravenously, and it was then that they began to understand what was happening, what creatures it was that had killed their father, what disease it was that was beginning to spread across the nation. Zombies. They were left with no choice but to kill the creature their uncle had been reduced to. They kept moving. And, for a time, it seemed the farther south they drove, the safer things got. But it wasn't long before they ran out of gas. They still had heavy supplies, but this only made them a target for a desperate band of renegades. The apocalyptic times were making savages of even the most civil people, and they threatened them, with Catherine at knife-point, to hand over all of their provisions. Although they complied with the demand, Catherine made a sudden movement in the raiders' chaotic attempt to get away, and they ended up slitting Catherine's throat and leaving her for dead.
Revenge burned in many of their hearts, and although they managed to find fresh supplies at an abandoned convenience store and a safe refuge in an old RV, Roy and several of the others insisted on tracking down Catherine's murderers, to avenge her death. Joel spoke out against this plan, arguing it wouldn't be worth it, even in the off-chance that they did manage to find them, but Roy, Toby, Sasha and Ava took most of the weapons and left anyway. Joel stayed behind, with Ricky, the youngest, and Brian, who, despite his frequent requests to tag along and help, was left at the RV due to his handicap. As fortune would have it, Roy and the others did manage to track the killers, and a violent encounter ensued. However, they returned to camp without Sasha, and a guilt-ridden Roy told them that she had perished.
For a time, they stayed at the RV, living off the supplies they had acquired from the store and the ones they had retrieved from the raiders, but, eventually, the RV was attacked by a small group of zombies, and although they managed to fend them off, Ricky ended up bitten. They had heard stories, at this point, stories that the bite was what caused the spread of the disease, and they sought a way to cure to it, but not before it began to infect him. He transformed into a zombie before their very eyes. They made attempts to restrain him, but it proved useless, and he bit Brian in his efforts to break free. Brian realized then that there was no cure, and, with the pistol he had kept at his side, in the midst of the chaos of his little brother's rabid outbursts, he shot himself in the head to keep from turning into a zombie himself. In the end, Toby shot Ricky.
Over the course of the next few days, Toby, who had also been bitten by Ricky, although no one had realized it at the time, began displaying symptoms, symptoms which went unnoticed, until the night he went rabid. Although it came as a shock, their recent exposure to the infection had taught them that there was no other choice, and Roy shot his friend, who died in his arms. Only Joel, Roy and Ava remained, traveling from town to town, making sure to keep their supplies well-stocked, and always staying on the move, no matter what. While moving between cities, however, they ended up stuck in a crowd of refugees, and, as everyone was slowly making their way out, they received word that there was an attack, a huge horde of zombies headed directly their way, and the crowd quickly turned into a frightened mob. In everyone's panic to get away, the crowd separated the brothers from Ava, dragging her in one direction, and them off in the other. Although they backtracked, heading the way they had last seen her pulled off, they were unable to find her.
Now, although staying alive is a high priority, finding their lost little sister has taken precedence. Alive, dead, or undead, they are determined to find her.
