for the living."
FAMILY
Family is something Joel holds very close to his heart, and although he grew up feeling like an outsider, as though he was never fully one of them, he was very close to his brothers, and to his sister, Ava. He was raised alongside Roy, and for a time, it was only the two of them, before his father made amends with his wife, and more of their siblings came along. The two were each other's closest friends growing up, and each other's first rivals. Roy was one of his first childhood role models, second only to their father. He bore much love and respect for him, although Joel never could entirely get over the feeling of being Edward's greatest shame, the one time their noble father had forgotten his honor. He also never knew his mother, and he spent much of his life wondering about her, which was only ever further perpetuated by the fact that his father never spoke of her. He felt a close kinship with his little sister Ava, having come to harbor a special soft spot for her. The two shared a bond in feeling like outsiders in the world. She would often seek him out, coming to him with her troubles or when she was just feeling exasperated. Also similar to himself, his younger brother Brian was more of the silent type, taking more time to observe than to actually interact with the world around him, and although he had more of a knack for mischief, they did share this connection, one that was rather unique among their otherwise louder, more domineering siblings. Ricky looked up to all of them, and he was easy enough for them all to get along with, bringing a lighthearted, chidlish aspect to the atmosphere. And, although she was the only one amongst his brothers and sisters who ever intentionally made him feel isolated growing up, taking after her mother in this regard, he and his sister Sasha came to an understanding the older she grew, and the more she matured. The only other member of his family who made him feel this way was their foster-brother, Toby, who was taken in and raised with them since he was eight. He delighted in taunting him with frequent reminders of what he was, the bastard who didn't belong, who no one really wanted. He never fully made amends with Toby before he died. Forced to watch his family slowly diminish, one by one, the longer this apocalypse has gone on has brought Joel face-to-face with the stark reality of his greatest fear: the fear of loss. No matter how many people he loses, the feeling still brings a fresh pain each time.
FRIENDS
For a long while, he didn't put in much time or effort into making any friends, having come from a large family which provided more than enough company, and always being more of a loner, as it was. However, throughout his college years, he did form a few close friendships, most of them by accident, and the closer they grew, the more he came to see them as something of a second family. He showed them the same level of devotion and loyalty which he showed his real family. In the end, however, he lost them to the armies of undead, as well.
LOVERS
While several options have arisen, romance is not something Joel has ever sought for himself, and he has turned down every opportunity. And now, in the present state of things, such a thing has fallen even lower in his priorities.
ENEMIES
Although he does not tend to hold grudges against people, preferring to look at the big picture than to let past wrongs get in the way of the present, he does feel a lingering, all-encompassing rage toward anyone who harms his loved ones. This tends to be the only grounds on which someone can make an enemy out of him, but even these people can be forgiven, if attempts are made toward earning it. Even in the case of those who do not, however, he generally does not seek out retribution or otherwise take action against them, if it will come at the expense of something or someone more important to him. This horde of undead creatures, however, is an enemy which he has no trouble destroying without any remorse.
